In this edition we have put together a series of diferent texts in which
we pretend to review and analize the diferent forms of contemporary
cultural production from a wide range of points of view and work fileds.
As you will able to read in this booklet, we can not understand production
from only one way, but we need to define it as an open front, from a
teorethical point of view but also openeing its pragmatic apsects, which
we believe necessary to re-think, analyze in order to understand the
complex network of relations that we can currently find in this world.
The culture world, keeps hiding the notion of production behind a dated
signifier: creation, with this, culture has remained untouched by this
type of studies, it continues holding its basic aspects of production
in the hands of the demiurge who, as such, keeps refusing to answer
many of our questions. But now, in a moment in which we need to assist
artists and cultrual producers with rights, we need to interpelate creators
as producers, so we can find hidden strategies and the precarious production
conditions which still remain. Striving for clarity, we need to finally
empower those who feed with choice and quality, our poor cultural world.
Our intention is also to question the politcal structures which allow
production to happen, but also to understand the unjust reverse to them,
which make certain performances and productions to remain silenced.
We understand that production carries along a long and uncomfortable
Marxist shadow, it is not our aim to criticize or take away credit to
this notion, but after aknowledging this past, we want to give strenght
and update it, adding some notions that the hard and economicist ideology
could not take on board. Notions such as care labor, which we consider
basic to understand the structure which sustains prodution, a production
which still has a long heterosexual character. With the introduction
of care ethics to the third sector, we argue that we need to value once
more the human and emotional apsect which now, lubricates and, in many
cases, is part of the machieary behind the production of objects and
surplus.
At the same time, the need to control what later will be translated
into work power, the need to control life, has taken cience to introduce
in our daily lives and in its laboratories the paradigm of the production
of life. Biotechnology, clonation and the need to stick a hand in the
uncontrolable mess which life is, has pushed us to ask what lies behind
this non-natural world of production and re-production of forms of life.
Under the term producers we should be able to clasify the entities and
subjects which knit the nets that make posible the movement and re-production
of information. These new channels which are being implemented with
movement and speed, are growing firmer and more effective. These are
now visible entities which we can study as systems in the traditional
way, applying the neo-liberal network model or in the way in which we
like to percieve them, as action platforms.
With the incorporation of difference into our markets, with the politically
correct introduction of the other, we see some ethical questions arise.
The assimilation of this diference by a production system will turn
all this into market shares, spaces to open or struggles to gain the
buyers fidelity to a product.
We are facing a world which needs to be constantly revised, we need
to generate situated critiques but at the same time, to spread and share
knowledge, working towards a confluence of different thoughts and needs.
This can help towards our intention to make certain aspects of this
world better.
Some of the strategies which were proper to the reialm of computers
and technology, such as open source systems, copyleft licenses or ways
to ensure the free distribution of information, now can be used as tools
to grant continuity towards the production of knowledge. They help to
protect the producer and ensure certain porductive modes.
Some of the texts here collected already existed and had been published
elsewere, we publish them next to some articles written thinnking in
this booklet. That is why we want to thank our contributors and female
and male writers for lending us their work. They have all been understanding
and helpful. We hope that the selection of texts and their combination
will help to re-inforce and actualize certain aspects already contained
in them. We would be glad if it helps to understand a bigger picture
in which to place contemporany production.
None of the texts here contained have been transalted for this booklet,
that is why they are in Spanish and English, most of the times they
are in the original language in which they were first written. In our
website (www.yproductions.org) we have open links to other versions
of the texts here contained and we also provide information on the authors
and more of the works that they have done elsewhere.
The edition of this booklet has been funded by the Fundación
30kms, we apreciate and thank their collaboration in this project. We
have designed a cooperative structure in which the work invested by
the authors (that is, the texts) will be retributed with the distribution
of the whole of the benefits provided by the sale of the copies of these
books.
We do hope that this work can be helpful and that you enjoy reading
it, YP
